To investigate the symbolic quality of preschoolers' gestural representations in the absence of real objects, 48 children (16 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds) performed 2 tasks. In the first task, they were asked to pretend to use 8 common objects (e.g., "pretend to brush your teeth with a toothbrush").

Piaget (1936/1953) identified the end of the second year of life as a major turning point in cognitive development, marked by the advent of the symbolic function - the ability to use symbols to represent or stand for perceived objects and events.

Bruner thought that learners interpret the world through three modes of representation: enactive, iconic, and symbolic. He believed that these modes of representation followed in sequence, but unlike developmental theorists such as Piaget, he argued that they are not age dependent.

Of course, he did not mean that infants are not aware of the objects Piaget's operativity is considered to be prior to, and ultimately provides the foundation for, everyday learning, much like fluid ability's relation to crystallized intelligence. Piaget's theory also aligns with another psychometric theory, namely the psychometric theory of g, general intelligence.
